According to a recent Indiana University study-researchers have confirmed
that when men and women communicate through technology, it's women who are more expressive; specifically when men and women text message, women will use more non-standard (i.e. characters and symbols), expressive language techniques. The study found women used more non-standard language such as abbreviations or expressive insertions that represented characteristics including enthusiasm, sadness, emphasis and individuality. And while women were both more economical and expressive, they also came closer to maxing out, or did max out, on the 160-character message limit more often than their male counterparts.
Here are some quick pointers to further leverage your text game:
1. In our last post we mentioned the concept of mirroring her TIME response. If she takes 5 minutes to reply-you take 5 minutes to reply back and so forth. Taking the concept of mirroring a step up if you want to make a virtual connection quicker—mirror her ICONS and expressions.
2. Never overreact to a text message of hers at either end of the emotional spectrum. If she replies to one of your message and it seems a little “heavy handed” or overly aggressive or maybe completely cold, you now know that the way the opposites sex uses technology is different from us. As a side note- something that may seems obvious but forgotten with the back and forth of texting is that unlike a face-to-face conversation, you don’t have the micro-expressions and body language to properly evaluate every text at dare I say face value.
3. Women use SEXting (flirtatious SMS language with sexual undertones) to regain some of the power lost in the absence not being in your physical presence. Since they can’t leverage their physical beauty to draw you into there web of seduction, they over emphasis the icons and expressions as a means to hook you in. Knowing this-make sure to always manage the flow of the conversation by “brushing off” any overt text message that implies she wants to hook up with you. As a recent study showed, generally speaking, women will hook up with a guy within 2 – 3 weeks. Any text message with sexual undertones is mostly like her way of “feeling you out”.
Survival Tip: The concepts discussed above can be used across other technological platform. Give some of these concepts a try over IM and emails…you may be surprised as the results!
