She was simply stunning. Caramel skinned, soft welcoming seductive eyes, possessing a smile that can light up a room, I was hooked. Approaching her became a necessity not a desire. As she entered the train I can see her headed towards the only empty seat available that was coincidental next to me. Faith, serendipity, whatever you want to call it, filled with years of training, my brain quickly sprung into action, setting forth body language, opening statements, conversation hooks, movement mirroring among just a few tricks of the trade.
My mental recorder repeated, “Stay calm, cool and collected—think James Dean, Bond, Cooley”
“Hey, you have a little something on your face…” as I make a motion to the corner of my lips in demonstration. She quickly tries to wipe the side of her month in the hopes to remove whatever was there. In actuality, there was never anything there. This technique is often used to desensitizes attractive women who are expecting guys to give them lame pick up lines. (More on this in a future post)
I was off to the races.
Over the next 10 stops I used every single trick of the trade. She would engage but her body language was telling me something different. She just wasn’t that into me. As I got off my station, the clouds darken, and lighting lit up the skies.
“I wonder if God is disappointed like I am that she wasn’t into me,” I thought (spoke like a true egomaniac)
Heavy rain was on its way. First came the lighting and then the thunder: and gents that’s THE LESSON. I had tried every trick in the book but had overlooked one very important aspect.
Lighting!
Specifically that Light travels quicker then sound. And as with a thunderstorm, the lighting (visual) comes first followed by the thunder (sound-my “pick up game”). On this particular day, let’s just say I was not wearing flattering clothes. She had made a judgment about me way before I even spoke a word. First impressions matter/ this experience underlines the importance of trying to look our best if not all of the time, at least most of the time…because there may not be a second chance.
