As we reflect on the lessons and life of Martin Luther King Jr., undoubtedly, a slew of positive adjectives come to mind. MLK embodied integrity, non-violence and most of all love. But in a world of 10+% of unemployment, male college enrollment and graduation down by almost 20% since the early 1980’s, and women outliving men by a margin of 5+ years, we shouldn’t neglect one of MLK’s most significant value: Actionable Excellence.
Whether symbolized by his non-violent demonstrations of peace, his unforgettable and inspirational speeches (of which he spent hours perfecting) or voracious appetite for knowledge (he would read and study scripture days on end as a preacher and was accepted to College at the age of 15-without formally graduating High School), actionable excellence became the cornerstone of his success and legacy.
Lesson: Embody actionable excellence in your relationship. Connect with your inner MLK.
Actionable excellence refers too striving at achieving personal goals that will profoundly resonate with our significant other. What would a 10% increase in your income mean to you and your relationship? How would reading one book a month impact your knowledge base and creativity? What would a 10 lb weight lose mean to your overall health and longevity?
The best part? A life of actionable excellence is achievable in minor steps. So make your own “I have a dream” list of goals and remember; with a tenacious assault of actionable excellence on our yearly goals (I’ve refrain from using the dreaded “resolution word”) we will not only elevate our own personal sense of worth, but additionally, you will build a firm foundation in your long term relationship(s).
Here’s a small list to get you started on your road too excellence in 2011:
1. Increase your gross by 10%
2. Drop 10 pounds before the end of summer
3. Be more gentlemanly
4. Travel once outside the US this year
5. Donate quarterly too a random non-profit
6. Hang out socially with your closest friends at least once a month
Finally, I leave you with a quote from MLK that encompasses actionable excellences:
“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say; here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”-MLK
