Words do matter.

The steady drip of projected doubt came to a head this week when President Obama was obliged to release his birth certificate to validate his citizenship (Note: he was the first president in 235 years to be requested to do so).  The barrage of media attention had planted enough doubt among the masses—a tipping point, requiring action. And within the events of the past week, we uncover an important lesson. Our external conversations are just as important as our internal.

We live in a world of causation, in part, powered by the words we us.  Take a few minutes today and check out the following video. When you are done: ask yourself—how do I speak to my significant other(s)?

What’s the role of a CEO?

Some would propose that it’s to assure the day-to-day operation of a business. To manage the daily agenda, checking off action items as they are achieved. I would argue, however, that the goal of a CEO is to help create the agenda, provide a vision for the masses.  And yet in a world that deems we take a firmer control in our lives, the general movement among men is to shy away from setting the agenda of their relationship.

 Some of the reasoning is “I’m too busy”, “Things are going great, why rock the boat”, and my personal favorite: “I want to make her happy; so we try to do things that she enjoys doing”.

Gentlemanly qualities require that we listen to our other half.  And engaging in events that she will enjoy certainly symbolizes that you’re doing so. No woman would tell you different. However, we need to be sensitive to the idea that being overly accommodating may have you perceived weaker, and more importantly as “none interested” in the relationship.  What she needs is a CEO, with an agenda setting mentally.

“Independent” Woman Warning…

Taking the lead with independent woman may seem that you’re swimming upstream. At time it might even feel unnatural as she “resist” your agenda setting ways. But know this: your agenda “setting” validates her.  It rewards that part of her, which suggests her work titles, degrees where worth the pursuit, and more importantly, that she’s not lost any of her feminine qualities in the quest of these external trophies. It’s a find balance, but if done properly, enriches the relationship.

This weekend, before you ask her what she would like to do, you might want to rethink who’s setting the tone of the relationship and the consequences that may follow.

The secret, then, is to crave out a niche; an identity that balances what she desires with your core self, without compromising your morality.  You will never be able to concoct the prefect “brew” of emotional elements (or perhaps you can), but when you need to add some sizzle to the relationship, ask yourself—Why does she date ME?
